Robert Smith werd geboren in Yorkshire en ging in Wales naar de universiteit. Daarna vertrok hij naar Nederland om barokcello te studeren bij Wouter Möller, Jaap ter  Linden en aansluitend bij Viola de Hoog. Hij was eerste cellist van het European Union Baroque Orchestra in 2005/6, onder leiding van o.a. Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Rachel Podger en Christophe Coin. Bob speelt nu in verschillende ensembles zoals Les Eléments (Franse barok cantates), The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra en Fantasticus.

Hij studeert viola da gamba bij Mieneke van der Velden en gaat daarnast vaak naar Basel, Zwitserland, voor les bij Paolo Pandolfo. In zijn vrije tijd leert Bob Japans.

In 2010 heeft Bob de 2e prijs gewonnen in de 4e Internationaler Solistenwettbewerb für Alte Musik 2010 ter Brunnenthal in Oostenrijk. Eerder heeft Robert, samen met Ensemble Diamanté, prijzen gewonnen in het Musica Antica Concours ter Brugge (2e) en het Van Wassenaer Councours, Amsterdam (3e  en Publieksprijs).  In 2005 won hij een geldprijs van het Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

Robert Smith is a Yorkshire-born baroque cellist and viola da gambist. He studied baroque cello in Amsterdam with Wouter Möller, Jaap ter Linden and Viola da Hoog. He also studied Viola da Gamba with Mieneke van der Velden (Amsterdam) and Paolo Pandolfo (Basel). He was principal cellist for the European Union Baroque Orchestra in 2005/6 under the direction of, amongst others, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Rachel Podger and Christophe Coin. Robert plays with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, De Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht, and the ensembles Les Elements and Fantasticus. His spare time is used learning Japanese.

Robert has performed several times in the prestigious Amsterdam Concertgebouw and has been broadcast in live performances on Dutch Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3. As part of Ensemble Diamanté he won second prize in the renowned Bruges Musica Antiqua Concours and the Audience Prize in the International Van Wassenaer Concours (Amsterdam).  In 2010 he won the second prize in the International Baroque Soloist Competition in Brunnenthal, Austria.
